The 8-month sleep regression: crawling, stranger anxiety, wakeful nights
Short answer: between eight and ten months, crawling, stranger anxiety, teeth and the switch to two naps often arrive at the same time. That knocks many babies out of their sleep for two to six weeks. Unlike at four months, sleep itself does not change, only the life around it.
What is going on at eight months
Crawling and pulling up. Your baby practices at night what it learned during the day. Some stand in the crib at 3 am and do not know how to get back down.
Stranger anxiety. Around the eighth month babies understand that you can be gone. Falling asleep alone gets harder, waking up without you gets louder.
The switch to two naps. Between seven and nine months the third nap drops away. In the transition the baby is often overtired in the evening.
Teeth. The upper incisors often come right now. How much they change sleep is in Teething and sleep.
Why this is not a regression
At four months sleep measurably rebuilds itself, we described that in the article on the 4-month sleep regression. At eight months nothing like that happens. The sleep cycles stay as they are. What changes is the amount of new things your baby is processing. That is why the phase is a different length for every baby, and some notice nothing at all.
What helps
Let them practice by day. Lots of crawling, pulling up and sitting back down during the day, then less has to be practiced at night. Show your baby how to sit down from standing.
Practice goodbyes. Short separations during the day with a clear "I will be back" and coming back. Peekaboo games exist for exactly this.
Adjust the wake windows. At eight months they are 2.5 to 3.5 hours. When the third nap drops, bedtime may move earlier for a few weeks, 6 pm is not a mistake.
Stay calm and predictable. Same bedtime routine, little light and few words at night. If your baby is standing at night, lay them down, stay briefly, leave again.
When to ask
If the phase has not improved a step after six weeks, if fever, ear rubbing or unusual breathing come along, or if your baby is persistently unhappy during the day. The 9-month check-up falls right into this time, a good moment to bring up sleep.
How HeyFini makes the phase visible
In What has changed you see week against week whether nights have got shorter and whether the third nap is really gone. The Sleep Coach adjusts the wake window when naps get fewer, and in the journal you note with a tag when crawling or a tooth arrived. After three weeks the patterns tell you whether nights after teething days are really shorter for your baby.

Frequently asked questions
How long does the 8-month sleep regression last?
Usually two to six weeks, depending on how many developmental steps come together. Once crawling is secure and the two-nap rhythm has settled, nights usually calm down on their own.
My baby stands in the crib at night and cries. What do I do?
Show them again and again during the day how to sit down from standing. At night lay them down calmly, stay a moment and leave again. After a few days they can usually do it alone.
Should I drop the third nap?
Do not drop it, let it go. If your baby refuses the third nap several days in a row or bedtime gets too late because of it, the time has come. In the transition bedtime may start earlier.
